The Incredible Speed of the Internet (You thought your FIOS was fast)

March 19th, 2009 Robert Kania 1 comment

I just thought I would brag about the insane speed of Virginia Tech’s internet.   It has been slower recently due I suppose to more traffic, but it is still insane compared to most places.

Update: While being here for Summer Session I was able to attain the picture above.

During the Fall I was able to get this to go from 40000-60000, but as I said its been slower now.  Still, where else but a college campus would you find this.  I had dial up until 2 years ago, then we finally upgraded to DSL, which I still regret using on breaks now.  It is soooo slow compared to this.  Just for comparison, DSL usually returns about 200-700 kb/s on Speedtest. We have 99 percentile of the global internet connection in terms of speed.  BTW, the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) has “data outputted by blasting it through dedicated 10 gigabit-per-second fibre optic lines to 11 Tier 1 sites across North America, Asia and Europe.”  That is the epitome of fast.
